Hongtuya Fm base reconstruction

Hongtuya Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2ht (27a,b)

Province:
Shandong

Type Locality and Naming

Liu Mingwei (1994) erected the Hongtuya Formation. The type locality is in Hongtuya of Guliuzhen (120º44', 36º59'), the Laiyang City, Shandong. Upper-Middle formation in the Wangshi Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

Jiaolai Basin. The formation is mostly composed of grayish purple conglomerate, sandstone, reddish siltstone and fine grind sandstone. The purple red conglomerate and sandstone mark its top and bottom. Cross-beddings are developed. Basalt beds are intercalated in the strata in the northern Jiaozhou City and Puji, Wulian areas. The formation is of great thickness ranging from 2987 to 4000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is contact conformably with underlying Xingezhang Fm.

Upper contact

The formation is contact conformably with the overlying Jiaozhou Fm / Jingangkou Fm.

Regional extent

The Hongtuya Formation is wide spread in the Shandong Province, and well exposed in eastern Shandong with Laiyang as the best locality.

The formation yields bivalves Bithynia gobiensis, Sphaerium shandongensis, Calba sp., Physa sp.; ostracods Cypridea-Talycypridea-Ziziphocypris assemblage; sporopollen Talicypridea amoena,T. subturgida, T, quadrata, Candona laiyangensis, C. roctangulata, Cypridea gigantea, C. laiyangensis, Cypridea cavernosa, Metacypris kaitungensis etc., they belong to Schizaeoisporites- Classopollis- Ulmipollenites and Talicypridea-Candona assemblages.

Age

The 40Ar-39Ar age of the basalt in the Hongtuya Formation is 73.5±0.3 Ma (Yan et al., 2003). The Ar-Ar age of the upper basaltic volcanic rocks in the Hongtuya Formation from LK-1 is 73.5±1.1 Ma (Li Y J et al., 2018). The data indicate that the formation is Late Cretaceous.
