Hongtuya Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Liu Mingwei (1994) erected the Hongtuya Formation. The type locality is in Hongtuya of Guliuzhen (120º44', 36º59'), the Laiyang City, Shandong. Upper-Middle formation in the Wangshi Gr.
Lithology and Thickness
Jiaolai Basin. The formation is mostly composed of grayish purple conglomerate, sandstone, reddish siltstone and fine grind sandstone. The purple red conglomerate and sandstone mark its top and bottom. Cross-beddings are developed. Basalt beds are intercalated in the strata in the northern Jiaozhou City and Puji, Wulian areas. The formation is of great thickness ranging from 2987 to 4000 m.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation is contact conformably with underlying Xingezhang Fm.
Upper contact
The formation is contact conformably with the overlying Jiaozhou Fm / Jingangkou Fm.
Regional extent
The Hongtuya Formation is wide spread in the Shandong Province, and well exposed in eastern Shandong with Laiyang as the best locality.

Fossils
The formation yields bivalves Bithynia gobiensis, Sphaerium shandongensis, Calba sp., Physa sp.; ostracods Cypridea-Talycypridea-Ziziphocypris assemblage; sporopollen Talicypridea amoena,T. subturgida, T, quadrata, Candona laiyangensis, C. roctangulata, Cypridea gigantea, C. laiyangensis, Cypridea cavernosa, Metacypris kaitungensis etc., they belong to Schizaeoisporites- Classopollis- Ulmipollenites and Talicypridea-Candona assemblages.
